California Community Colleges Task Force on Workforce, Job Creation and a Strong Economy: Report and Recommendations - Faced with more jobs than educated workers to fill them, a California task force came up with 25 recommendations for its 113-college system. Among key recommendations: to revise career technical education (CTE) curriculum approval processes to ensure instructional programs keep pace with industry needs, to increase the pool of CTE instructors and to establish a sustained, supplemental funding source to increase community college capacity to create, adapt and maintain quality CTE courses. Strengthening College Readiness, Access, and Success: Community College Roles - Idaho ranks 50th out of 50 states in the rate at which the state's high school graduates go directly to college. To improve that number, recommendations include supported dual enrollment, especially for populations that are less likely to be college-bound. Also, community colleges should have success coaches on-site in high school, clear academic and career pathways should be designed as well as pathways to four-year institutions with no credit loss. Doubling Graduation Rates: Three-Year Effects of CUNY's Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) for Developmental Education Students - The City University of New York increased graduation rates at community colleges by offering tuition waivers, free Metro cards and comprehensive advisement. Researchers concluded the Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) initiative was well implemented, improved student outcomes and the cost per degree was less than the control condition. Optimizing Reverse Transfer Policies and Processes: Lessons from Twelve CWID States - In 2012, five foundations launched the Credit When It’s Due (CWID) initiative to encourage partnerships of community colleges and universities to expand programs that award associate degrees to transfer students when the student completes the requirements for the associate degree while pursuing a bachelor’s degree, also known as “reverse transfer.” This describes changes occurring at the state, system, and institution levels with implementation of reverse transfer in 12 CWID states. The Road Less Traveled: Realizing the Potential of Career Technical Education in the California Community Colleges - This report examines four high-wage, high-need career pathways in the California Community Colleges as a basis for exploring the Career Technical Education (CTE) mission and its role in the college completion agenda. The study found that while CTE has the potential to meet the state’s completion, workforce and equity goals, there is a lack of priority on awarding technical certificates and degrees and an absence of clear pathways for students to follow in pursuing those credentials.
