STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) has often been overlooked in the earliest grades. But in recent years, several states have developed STEAM education with a focus on the youngest students. Although many states have begun this work, state and local leaders still seek guidance on who can make decisions to develop STEAM education.
This Policy Outline provides a high-level overview of the state-level actors who can play a central role in developing STEAM education in preschool and elementary, and details several state examples that may serve as a model for those interested in this work.
Learn more in this Policy Brief that highlights research and policy implications of STEAM education for young students.
